Team Sarcoma Uk 2009

The Southcoast Sarcoma Support Group held a picnic at Moors valley park in the New Forest.

A write up of the event by Tricia Moate

We all enjoyed our picnic together at Moors Valley Country Park last Sunday. We do not have many opportunities to meet up and we  made the most of the time together. The country park is in Dorset in south of England and people came from many areas of the south and west and even the Midlands. There was a total of 19 people, 11 of whom were sarcoma patients. The  event was organised by some members of the recently established Sarcoma South UK Support group: Terri, Sheila, Jan and Tricia.

On arrival we commandeered two large picnic tables and moved them near to some large shrubs to protect us from the buffeting winds  - it was "blowing a Hooley" as we say in the UK. We are made of stern stuff as  we have all grown up being able to enjoy  picnics in the most inclement of weathers: it is part of being British. We laid out a tablecloth and weighed it  down with many bottles of Cava, a white sparkling wine. We added the makings of a Dorset Cream Tea which were fruited scones, thick clotted cream and fine raspberry and strawberry jams and we welcomed friends as they arrived. People brought additions to the picnic, all manner of savoury and sweet treats, it really was a feast. Some items became airborne and the foxes must have dined  well that evening. Across the picnic field a jazz band was providing background music as we caught up with old friends and made new friends and chatted to each other. The time sped by and soon we had to start packing everything up. Some  people had long drives ahead of them. We would not have all got together if not for the Team Sarcoma Initiative so we owe you thanks for that. We did not raise  any money but we renewed and made new friendships which is so important in this sometimes lonely disease.

East Midlands Curry Night

The East Midlands Sarcoma Support group held a Charity Curry night in June 2008, to raise awareness of Sarcoma and funds for the Sarcoma Trust at Dine India, Countesthorpe, Leicestershire.
The night was attended by patients / carers and health care professionals from throughout the Midlands.
As well as a lovely Indian Buffet we had a charity auction and raffle and managed to raise a staggering £1311 pounds.
Thanks to Anita Pabla and Kathryn Yates (in photo) for organising the event and generous donations of prizes made by all. Also a big thank you to Mark Honey and Andrew Yates for there professional help with the auction.

Kathryn’s daughter Harriet (in purple top below, aged 15yrs) also did her bit to raise awareness of Sarcoma at Countesthorpe Community College.

Kathryn said “I am very proud of her and the fact that she prepared and presented a speech to her year group about Sarcoma and how it had no boundarys and can effect young adults aswell.”

Harriet told us:

I am Harriet Yates and my Mum has had Sarcoma cancer. To raise awareness and money for Sarcoma Trust, I organised a cake sale at my college. Few, if any, people would have heard about Sarcoma at my college, so I also organised a talk for the people in my half year group. The cake sale went well, with a lot of help from hungry teachers and we raised £44.54!”
